Susan Boyle is this year’s Paul Potts.

Potts, a Carphone Warehouse salesman and 2007 Britain’s Got Talent contestant, rocked audiences with his rendition of “Nessun Dorma.” He went on to win the competition and was subsequently signed to Sony Records, where his debut album sold over 2 million copies.

Boyle seems poised to do the same.

Introducing Elz Cuya…

Wednesday, March 4th, 2009

It is my pleasure to introduce Crucial Minutiae’s guest blogger for the month of March, Elz Cuya. Elz left her beloved city of San Francisco to join Hip Hop Theater Festival headquarters in New York as the External Affairs Director. She is also the founder of the Poetry Mission in San Francisco, the celebrated Mission District-based literary community that presents poetry, performance art and music. Elz currently lives in Bushwick, hella propagating words like “hella,” and facilitates a bi-monthly creative writing workshop in Bed-Stuy. Plus she’s one of the coolest people I’ve ever met. Show her some love.

notoriousIt’s weird to walk into a movie knowing how it’s going to end.

In general, I avoid the biopic because mid-movie I will inevitably start thinking about which scenes actually happened and which ones were manufactured to move the silver screen version of things along. Occasionally, I see a What’s Love Got to Do With It, where the acting is so good it actually doesn’t matter which parts of the story are true.

Fall 1993. Howard University Homecoming. In the dorm room of a friend of my friend C. I first heard Biggie Smalls’ “Party and Bullshit.”

Who. Is. That?

None of us knew then that B.I.G. would become Notorious, but I did leave DC with a tape of “P&B” on repeat.

So with early nineties nostalgia all over it, I facebooked my old-school, college crew (yes, Carman 7!) and planned a field trip to a Saturday night showing of Notorious.

laws-of-motionI’ve been thinking a lot about Newton’s laws of motion. And President-elect Obama. And Chuck Bass.

Yes, this is what I do in my spare time.

Last week’s Gossip Girl found a drunken Chuck Bass, ambling along the edge of the roof of a very tall building. One misstep and he’d be splat! on the pavement like the bottle of Jack that slipped from his hand moments earlier.

But Gossip Girl is a television series. And Chuck (and Blair) are the reasons I tune in. So the threat of his death was a false one. As any avid GG fan can tell you they aren’t going to kill Chuck Bass.

Never as Good as the First Time

Sunday, November 2nd, 2008

My best friend J lives in Paris. We Skype once a week. Email in-between. And try to stay as involved in each other’s lives as possible.

When I told her I was having dinner with my ex, I could hear her eyes rolling over the phone. “Nobody wants to see that movie again,” she said.

She was right.

It’s a disaster film.

Like Cloverfield on crack.

We all know how it ends.

But some movies are worth watching over and over again, no?

I never thought I’d be one of those people who posts a concert set list on a blog.

Turns out, I am. It’s 1:13 AM and as K said, I’ve crossed the line.

Maybe I thought some part of the night would fade with time. Maybe I needed to be sure that this little dream of mine actually came true.

Whatever the reason, ladies and gentlemen, I present to you the set list –

I’ll Be Loving You (Forever)

Sunday, July 6th, 2008

I happen to like math. A lot. In fact, I have a Lisa Simpson-type love of numbers.

So you can only imagine my delight at discovering Scott Brown’s Nostalgorithm for Pop-Culture Sensations on my Google homepage.

Not since Rob Harvilla’s graphical dissertation on Mim’s single “This is Why I’m Hot” has a pop culture-based algorithm captured my heart.

Unlike Scott Brown, I’m actually excited about seeing the X-Files sequel. Not because I expect it to be a great film; I don’t go to the movies to see great films. I go for the funny and I go for camp.

Assuming The X-Files: I Want to Believe fits into neither category, it will most certainly satisfy my need for nostalgia. A throwback to countless Friday nights spent stuffed into a dorm room lounge, eating cheese fries and wondering out loud whether this was the episode where Mulder and Scully were finally going to do it.

Well I Guess It Would Be Nice…

Sunday, June 29th, 2008

In exactly twenty-two days George Michael will return to Madison Square Garden and I will be sitting in his lap.

Ok, that is not the truth.

But I will be in the audience, actively losing my mind.

The prepubescent girl inside of me, who was scandalized by the “I Want Your Sex” video, could not be more thrilled.

For my birthday, my friend B gave me the DVD collection Ladies and Gentlemen, The Best of George Michael. I’ve been watching it on repeat for days, in anticipation of George’s arrival,

So ladies and gentlemen, I offer you my top five George Michael videos. (note: My top five videos are not my top five George songs, that’s another list).

5. Too Funky
This song will never make my “best of” George mix, but the video is quintessential nineties glam and for that and that alone it makes the list. All the Top Model contestants in the world could not compare to one Linda Evangelista working a runway in a white fur coat and platinum wig. (more…)

I Want Your Sex

Sunday, May 18th, 2008

Sometimes relationships end horribly.

And sometimes no matter how horrific the ending, all you manage to remember are the good times. The post-coital private jokes, how he held your hand on a crowded city street or how you two held whole conversations without even saying a word.

It’s almost enough to make you forget that the relationship ended via text message and you may never see your Five Heartbeats soundtrack again.

This pretty much sums up how I feel about Sex and the City. I thought the series finale sold women everywhere out, opting for the fairytale ending of Mr. Big finally committing to Carrie. I just didn’t buy it. We were so over, we needed a new word for over.

Now five years after we parted ways, Sex and the City is back. This time in movie form. I have had enough time to heal. All is forgiven. I’ve already bought tickets for opening night.

In memory of the best of times, I present to you my top five episodes of “Sex and the City.”

Reasonable Doubt

2006_12_qnsshootprot.jpgContrary to the sign held by a woman at a December 2006 rally, 50 shots + New York City cops does not equal murder. It equals not guilty.

I was sitting on JFK-bound Jetblue flight when I heard the verdict. The miniature TV screen streamed live footage from outside the court house, occasionally cutting to video of Nicole Paultre Bell’s car en route to Sean Bell’s gravesite.

Across the aisle, a balding man in khaki shorts was watching the same channel. He nodded affirmatively to his wife. Indicating that justice had been served.

Faith

eli-stone.jpgIt will come as no surprise that I love Eli Stone. (I’ve been watching online, for those of you aware of my TV situation).

The show combines two of my favorite things – George Michael and a belief in signs.

On the series premiere, a very handsome George made a cameo, singing the 90s anthem Faith. Each episode (with the exception of the pilot, appropriately titled “Pilot”) is named after a George Michael song — Freedom, Father Figure, Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go. And a George Michael song has figured prominently in the storyline of almost every episode thus far.

It’s kind of like the show’s creators flipped through my fantasies, plucked this particular one out of my head and made it come true.

Miss You Much

Sunday, February 10th, 2008

old_tv_set.jpgTwo weeks ago, my hairdresser called to say that George Michael was going to be on a new show called Eli Stone.

Understanding my intense love of all things George, she knew how much this would mean to me.

What she did not know was that I no longer have a TV.*

Three months ago, when I moved into a new apartment, I decided not to get cable. After eight years of having more channels then I could ever possibly watch, I decided I did not need cable.

I will write more, I said. I will read more books. I will finally transfer all of my CDs into iTunes.

Mostly, what I’ve done is miss having cable.
